AVID Elementary

What is AVID?
Advancement Via Individual Determination

AVID provides support that students need to close the achievement gap and encourage college/career readiness skills that will lead to success. AVID teaches and reinforces academic behaviors and higher level thinking skills. Students learn about the organization, study skills, communication, and self-advocacy. AVID Elementary students take structured notes and answer and ask high-level questions that go beyond routine answers.

Who participates in AVID?
Students in grades 2, 3, 4 and 5 fully implement AVID strategies in their classrooms, however, ALL students at Melaleuca participate in AVID in some way. Students begin learning how to organize their materials and set goals starting in all of our Kindergarten classrooms!

What does AVID look like at Melaleuca?
The strong college-going culture on our campus encourages students to think about their college and career plans. Inspirational “street signs” are posted in each hallway to remind students of their goals and aspirations. Walls are covered with college pennants and banners.

Teachers proudly show off their alma mater outside each of their classrooms. Every student at Melaleuca has a binder, student agenda and folders with designated colors for each subject to help organize them starting in Kindergarten. Common expectations are clear throughout campus and students celebrate each other by using classroom cheers.
